Gregory seems to have it all youth, good looks, a beautiful wife, a job he loves as an elementary school teacher, a quiet house on the beach ...

So why is Gregory so miserable? Why is he unable to control his lingering gaze on his neighbor, Jake, the handsome truck driver who lives just down the way? Why does Gregory spend his private time keeping a secret journal that details fantasies and memories of him locked in embraces with other men?

It’s summer, and the peaceful lake belies the turmoil in Gregory's heart. His wife wants to start a family, while Gregory wants to start something with Jake, but doesn’t dare.

Climbing out of the closet is never easy, but it’s even more difficult when doing so might shatter the lives of those around you ...

Through the Closet Door edition by Rick R Reed Literature Fiction eBooks

Rick R. Reed's, Through the Closet Door, garners my first 5 hearts for a short story. Not since O. Henry's Gift of the Magi, have I found one as completely satisfying.

At 27, Gregory figures he should be happy. Other men covet his sexy, loving wife. He enjoys his career as a third-grade teacher and their home by the lake.

If only he weren't gay. This coming out story tracks Gregory’s shifting assessment of the choice to live as a straight man.

It’s the tale of one frail human. But Reed lets readers peek into Gregory's wondrously written journal, which is more vibrant than his life. There, we learn of his passion, and can contrast it with his real life.  Gregory's confusion is palpable, almost another character.

Most people have a "self" we disavow, though we must own it, we are to live peacefully. Reed writes the universal story of self-realization, packing enormous, angst, growth, and hope in 33 brief pages.

I was awed by Rick's capacity to portray intense psychological turmoil in brief moments, like a swim to the bottom of a pond! And his ending of Through the Closet Door is perfect: Neither sentimental, nor simplified.

I’ve never really liked short stories, but Rick R. Reed may just have made me a convert.

KU
Short, realistic and powerful. I normally don't like short stories but I'm glad I read this one.
Everyone has them, and some have more than others. Rick Reed has a way with the psychological thriller, and, Through the Closet Door weaves an intriguing tale of secrets, lust, love, and desire.
Even though this story is short, it packs a punch. with poetic words that and a picturesque setting. Despite this, the mood of this story is anything but light and carefree The main character's pain and desires are well portrayed. Nice ending
A wonderful story, I loved the Main characters of Jake, and Gregory. The fight that Gregory is going through is a hard battle, but he don't have to go through it alone. The characters were great, and for a short, story it is powerful, also it was well written.
I'm floored by this fantastic tale. The author has a deft and unique way of packing so much pain, secrets, lust, regrets, revelations, and hope into such a short story.
Since I read almost all of this authors work I borrowed this book through Unlimited without reading the blurb. I understand that it is a story of confusion and trying to come to terms with their authentic selves, but I felt as if this was a part of a larger book that I didn't read.
Wonderfully written — this is the story of Gregory, an in all appearances happily married young man who has struggled all his life with his desire for men. His Catholic upbringing and his family's views have not allowed him to pursue this and he has only able to express his feelings through a journal he's been writing since he was very young. Guilt and self loathing are killing him. You could feel Gregory's anguish, his existential crisis and his fear of how he would end up, as he feared, hurting his wife, when the moment of coming out of the closet comes, which will be soon. Reed gives humanity and depth to his characters, not falling into the genre's propensity for demonizing women- the wife is very tenderly and compassionately portrayed. Loved the book.
